On April 8th 2014, Microsoft terminated support for Windows XP. In the company’s own words, this means that “If you continue to use Windows XP now that support has ended, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.”
Microsoft will no longer provide security patches or updates for computers still running XP, placing your company data at risk of theft or loss as cyber-criminals seek to exploit old computers. The company is encouraging businesses to upgrade or replace their PCs with newer machines running Windows 7 or Windows 8. However such an upgrade is both costly and risks a drop in productivity as employees get to grips with the new machines.
One alternative that is both cost effective and simple to implement is a Hosted Desktop solution. We offer our own version of this solution, which gives you direct access to a Windows 7 “session” that looks and behaves just like the computer on your desk. The only difference is that the computer (or tablet) on your desk connects to the Hosted Desktop over the Internet – everything is actually stored in the Broadband Cloud Solutions data-centre.
By using a Hosted Desktop solution, your business data is immediately afforded the same level of protection as a “true” Windows 7 PC in the office. Best of all, your business does not need to replace any Windows XP computers because they are now simply devices used to access the hosted desktop sessions, no data will be stored on them in future. And instead of a costly capital expenditure project to replace your old computers, Hosted Desktop offers a manageable subscription fee instead.
