Unless you were sleeping under a rock last week, you could not have failed to hear about the birth of Prince George, the new son of William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Round the clock media coverage about the baby’s arrival dominated the news and the public consciousness for days.
But the media furore also masked the activities of many opportunistic Internet users who took the opportunity to register dozens of domain names loosely linked to the new baby. Speculators such as Matt James have purchased domain names like hrhprincegeorgecambridge.co.uk before putting them up for resale. Other variants taken by these cybersquatters include GeorgeAlexanderLouis.com and princegeorgecambreidge.co.uk. Within moments of the baby’s name being announced, there were around 400 related domains registered.
Whether these speculative registrations actually ever result in a sale is debatable, particularly in light of the upcoming custom domain extension plan. This new scheme will see business and organisations register their own domain extension, such as .bbc, which will create a virtually endless range of new web addresses. ICANN who oversee domain registrations has confirmed that .prince has yet to be registered as a valid domain extension, giving the House of Windsor another avenue should they desire a personalised website for the new Prince George.
