According to a recent survey by O2, 77% of employers encourage staff to work flexibly (including offsite). However, only 19% of employees corroborate this statistic, suggesting that flexible working provisions are not well advertised to staff.
The O2 survey comes in the same week that internet giant Yahoo! cancelled all remote working provisions, insisting that all staff attend their nearest office each day, where previously Yahoo! had actively encouraged remote working as part of many employees’ benefit packages.
These two news stories are disappointing to believers in remote working, and are causing many businesses to miss out on the benefits of such a system. Most staff believe that flexible working not only allows for a better work-life balance, which in turn raises morale, but also actually helps them be more productive too- all of which makes the missed opportunity of remote working all the more surprising. As O2 point out, the London Olympic Games encouraged many businesses to implement flexible working policies, but just 6 months later many of those plans have been abandoned.
