Your company website is one of the most important customer-facing assets you own. But did you know that your website address is not owned, but leased? And that if you fail to renew your website domain, someone could re-register it for their own company?
The trick is to stay on top of your website registration details do that you never fall prey to domain expiry. Here are a few tips to help:
1. Keep a record of everything
You should already keep detailed records of all your logon details somewhere safe. Therefore it makes perfect sense to keep a copy of your domain registrar account details alongside all your other important company documents.
2. Use a generic email address for account management
When you first registered your domain name, chances are that it was done so by one of your employees using their own company email address. But because domain registrations can last up to five years, that person may well leave before the address needs to be renewed.
If this happens, you will miss out on the emails from your domain registrar advising you to take action. Instead choose a generic email address that is not specific to a person for the registration/renewal – like accounts@ or admin@ – which will still be in use after that person leaves.
3. Set a reminder
Set yourself a calendar reminder for the domain expiry date with a reminder one week before the event. This will then prompt you to complete the renewal process with plenty of time to spare.
