Remote Web Workplace (RWW for short) is a nifty tool that comes bundled with Microsoft Small Business Server. It allows your staff to log into their PC in the office from anywhere in the world using nothing but a web browser, and work as if they were actually there in person.
Whilst it may be the most commonly used version, RWW is not the only remote working service to offer this level of flexibility. There are also a handful of third party applications, like LogMeIn, which are designed to do the same thing for businesses without a Small Business Server.
There are many obvious benefits to businesses using this kind of software, but some technical experts believe that it may come at a price. There is growing concern that RWW and similar systems pose a security risk, as they create an easier route for any hackers attempting to gain access to your network.
The other major problem with these services is that the user’s computer must always be switched on in the office, even when not in use. As there is no way to remotely power up the PC, you will end up paying for the electricity being used by the computer even when it is not being used.
Fortunately, it is possible to have all of the benefits of remote working without these security or power concerns, by opting for a hosted desktop system instead. A hosted desktop is run on a Cloud server outside your business network, preventing hackers from accessing your backdoor. Your staff can still access critical documents from anywhere in the world, and your cloud provider is responsible for security measures. Best of all, hosted desktops can replace the computers in your office almost completely.
