Choosing a domain nameRemember how much time and effort went into naming your company? That same focus and attention to detail is also needed when choosing a website domain name. Here’s what you need to consider when choosing yours:

1. Can you get your brand name?
People looking for your company online will probably search for your brand name first, so if it’s available, grab it! If not, see point 4, below.

2. Short or long?
The web has made us all more lazy, even when it comes to typing web addresses. Choosing a shorter name will make life easier for your visitors.

3. Avoid hyphens
Although you can have hyphens in your website address, they can prove problematic. People forget to type them in, and spelling your address over the phone is decidedly more difficult.

4. Get creative
Sometimes your “ideal” domain name may be taken, requiring you to be a bit more creative. Adding “the” to the start of your address, or “ltd” to the end may give you an acceptable alternative. You can also investigate other domain extensions, including .biz and .net.

5. Wait a while
Changes to the domain name system means that an almost unlimited supply of new domain names are on the way. You can find out more about the scheme here.
