Hosted desktops allow you to create a standardised computer system for all of your staff which can be accessed over the Internet. This means your staff can be productive anyplace, anytime, as long as they have an Internet connection. Whilst most of this information won’t be a surprise, one thing you may not know about hosted desktops is that they don’t necessarily require a PC.
What, no PC?
Hosted desktops can be accessed from a standard PC, but the technology also lends itself to use with tablets and new, thin client devices like Google’s Chromebook. The Chromebook looks like a lightweight laptop PC, but offers very little in the way of local storage. Files are stored in the Cloud, applications run in a web browser and almost nothing is actually “done” by the device itself.
In many ways, the Chromebook embodies what hosted desktops are about. The device provides a window onto the hosted desktop server which is responsible for doing the processing and storage. The Chromebook just passes your keystrokes through to the desktop. Your iPad or other tablet also works in exactly the same way.
Why not buy a PC?
PCs are relatively cheap these days, but they lack the portability of a notebook or Chromebook. The significant advantage of choosing a hosted desktop solution is that because the server does all the work, your client device will last many years longer than a “normal” PC.
